Men’s Vein Health

While women are more often affected with vein issues, many times men are surprised to learn that they are susceptible to vein conditions as well. Male vein conditions include varicose veins and spider veins, which if left untreated can lead to discoloration, bleeding, skin ulcers and heavy leg sensation that can hinder activity.  Vein conditions in men are caused by genetics; increasing age, weight gain and dietary factors.

Varicose veins typically occur when valves fail or leak, allowing for blood to flow backward under the force of gravity, which distends the veins. This backward flow, called “reflux,” causes blood to pool in the veins, resulting in the bulging appearance of varicose veins. Varicose veins can be a serious disorder that restricts work and leisure activities for both men and women. Risk factors include family history, trauma and occupations that require standing for long periods of time.

Ignoring the appearance of varicose veins can result in pain, fatigue, itching, burning, swelling, cramping and throbbing. Men who suffer from these symptoms instinctively lie down and elevate their legs to reduce the pooling of blood and relieve their discomfort. However, over time, these symptoms will intensify; and quite often, a person’s varicose veins will become large and “ropelike.” Overly distended varicose veins, especially near the ankle, can rupture and cause profuse hemorrhaging. Some legs can even deteriorate with swelling and dermatitis, which can lead to leg ulcers.

What causes varicose veins and spider veins?

Veins have a job of carrying oxygen-poor blood from the body back to the heart to become oxygenated and pumped back through the body, through arteries.  Veins have valves that act as one-way flaps, preventing the blood from flowing backwards as it moves up the legs. If the one-way valves become weak, blood can leak back into the vein and collect there. This problem is called venous insufficiency. Pooled blood enlarges the vein and it becomes varicose.
